Analysis
In this case, Odysseus has a lack of trust in Calypso. Odysseus doesn’t want listen to Calypso’s request or leave the island. A quote to back this up is, “ there is something behind all this; you cannot be really meaning to help me home when you bid me do such a dreadful thing as put to sea on a raft. Not even a well-found ship with a fair wind could venture on such a distant voyage: nothing that you can say or do shall make me go on board a raft unless you first solemnly swear that you mean me no mischief.” (Ch.5 pg 61) He’s sketchy about Calypso’s request b/c she “secretly” has a crush on Odysseus so, he doesn’t really trust her. She wants to marry him and Odysseus doesn’t want that. This is making him refuse to go on his journey back to Ithaca b/c Calypso is providing him the stuff and the one telling him to go.
